Every gun tells a story
The 13 Critical Tasks Workshop is based on the premise that the successful investigation of firearm related crimes is dependant upon the effective management of information found on the inside and on the outside of a gun – or in other words, the ballistics data for matching and the identifying data for crime gun tracing. The workshop assists with identifying best practices and, perhaps most importantly, results in the formulation of strategies and tactics that foster collaboration between all the various stakeholders.

These 13 tasks cover the steps from start to finish: before the crime, after the crime, from the crime scene, through the ensuing investigative and forensic processes, to the management of key information, and ultimately to the arrest and the
adjudication in court.

This course is designed for those experienced examiners who are eligible, or who will be eligible in the near future to take the IAI Latent Print Certification Test and want to identify their readiness for the examination. This course is not designed to teach the students how to apply ACE-V methodology, nor how to conduct latent print comparisons, but rather to evaluate these skills and abilities in a testing environment.

Duties: Identifies, collects, examines, interprets, classifies, and preserves evidence from major crime scene investigations and serious traffic accidents.

1. Identifies, collects, examines, interprets, classifies, and preserves evidence from crime scenes.
2. Locates, develops and examines latent fingerprints of different suspects.
3. Takes fingerprints for criminal and civil purposes.
4. Classifies, maintains and files fingerprints using the Henry, NCIC, and AFIS systems.
5. Testifies as a latent print expert in court.
6. Collects evidence and takes fingerprints at postmortem examinations; attends autopsies.
7. Photographs major crime scenes and serious accidents.
8. Maintains photo lab; develops prints; provides photographic services including duplicating photographs.
9. Completes crime scene reports and other written police department documentation.
10. Performs technical/chemical tests such as, gunshot, explosive residue, and blood sampling.
11. Conducts shoe track, tire track, and other similar comparisons.
12. Inputs and extracts information from the AFIS system; runs searches/matches on the system.
13. Provides Information to the FBI, AzDPS, and other law enforcement agencies.
14. Gives depositions to attorneys for court purposes; testifies in court as an expert witness.
15. Gives presentations at schools and community groups on identification techniques.
16. Performs various data entry and filing functions.
17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree in police science, criminalistics or a related field and one year of experience in fingerprinting or evidence collection with a law enforcement agency.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, is qualifying.

Special Requirements: Valid Arizona driver’s license at time of application. Experience and/or education in classification,comparison and identification of fingerprints. Obtain Terminal Operator Level A certification within 6 months of hire and must maintain during employment. Obtain AZAFIS Latent print operator certification within 1 year of hire and must maintain during employment. Must be available to work rotating shifts with irregular hours, weekends, holidays, on-call basis and availability over the normal duty hours.

Qualifications

If initial hire is to D.P.S. Criminalist I, the classification requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in chemistry or closely related physical or natural sciences with minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in chemistry and one (1) year of experience as a criminalist in a recognized crime laboratory. Additional criminalist experience, beyond the required one (1) year, may substitute for semester hours of chemistry (one (1) year additional criminalist experience equals ten (10) chemistry semester hours).

Additional requirements for Criminalist II, III, and IV are three (3), seven (7), and ten (10) years experience, respectively, as a criminalist in a recognized crime laboratory.

Must successfully complete the examination process.
Includes written test, oral board, background review, polygraph, drug test

Thanks to some prudent financial decisions over the past few years, a successful 2010 TRI-Division Educational Conference in Tucson and the assistance that we provided to the IAI during the International Educational Conference in Phoenix in 2012, the AIC is a much more financially secure entity.

One of our goals is to give back to the membership that has supported us over the years. An example of this was covering the cost of registration and providing a per diem for a member to attend the 2011 TRI-Division Educational Conference in North Las Vegas. A more recent example involves the co-listing of the Shooting Scene Re-Construction class in Glendale in March. If there is a class that you believe would benefit the membership, please don’t hesitate to suggest it.

Another of our goals is to provide free quarterly training events that are open to all members. One idea that we are considering is the proper photographic techniques and equipment involved while using ultra-violet and near ultra-violet light. If you have a topic that you would like to see covered or an idea for training, please don’t hesitate to suggest them.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Five years of experience in crime scene processing or other related forensic science discipline.
Two years of experience at a supervisory or acting supervisory level in this field.
A bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 32 hours of natural science related coursework, or a related natural science degree
Must hold a professional certification from the International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Certified Crime Scene Analyst within one year of hire.
