Under close to general supervision, performs semi-skilled to skilled technical crime scene investigation duties to identify, collect, preserve, photograph, compare fingerprints, and process other physical evidence at crime scenes; and Photograph, develop, print, enlarge and reduce photographs and to do other related work as required. This position also requires conducting accurate, effective evidence recordkeeping, maintaining evidence inventory and chain-of-custody, and preparation of evidence exhibits for court presentations and related courtroom testimony. Work is performed in accordance to Federal and State laws plus established policies and procedures with considerable need, after appropriate training is gained, for independent judgment and consistent exercising of a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

This is the entry level position within the Evidence Technician series. Employees in this classification will be provided opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and related training to perform the more routine or less complex tasks in processing and handling crime scene and evidence. Incumbents learn to identify, photograph, collect, and preserve physical evidence at crime scenes for laboratory analysis. Gathering, preserving, interpreting, and presenting crime scene evidence is done under close scrutiny of a supervisor and/or a full journey-level Evidence Technician II. Court testimony is limited to presentation of crime scene evidence. As experience, knowledge and skills are acquired, incumbents perform with less immediate supervision and continue to learn the full scope of duties and responsibilities. Advancement to the “II” level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the assigned functions, possession of essential licenses and/or certifications and completing the progression criteria established by the City. Employees are encouraged to regularly participate in continuing learning and obtaining additional certifications towards enhancing their knowledge, skills and abilities in the evidence technician profession. This position may be required to work varied shifts throughout the year including nights, weekends and holidays and must be able to work overtime as required. This position is also subject to call in/call back to support the operational needs of the department.
