Position Specific Summary
The Crime Scene Specialist I position at the City of Tucson’s Police Department conducts crime scene investigations, identifies, photographs, collects, and preserves evidence associated with crime scenes. Work is performed under the supervision of the Crime Scene Specialist Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Crime Scene Photography (45%) - Essential
Documents crime scenes, victims, suspects, autopsies, physical injuries, and evidence through specialized digital photography. Utilizes 3D laser scanner for documentation of crime scene measurements.
Crime Scene Processing (25%) - Essential
Utilizes various methods to develop and collect latent friction ridge detail and swabs evidence for DNA. Utilizes presumptive tests to identify bodily fluids, lead or copper. Utilizes gelatin impression lifts, forensic light sources, electrostatic dust print lifter and blood enhancement chemicals to develop and preserve evidence.
Crime Scene Documentation (10%) - Essential
Takes notes and prepares written reports documenting the crime scene. Uses verbal and written communication regarding key crime scene findings, sharing with appropriate personnel involved in the investigation. Logs and submits physical evidence from the crime scene to the Property and Evidence section. Uploads crime scene related images, evidence and documents to electronic case files.
Administrative tasks (10%) - Essential
Responds to various inquiries from department personnel, outside agencies and the public. Maintains crime scene related equipment and supplies. Completes vehicle inventory, stocking and inspection. Maintains subpoena records by logging the information and communicating with County Attorney’s Office. Updates personal proficiencies, certifications, and Curriculum Vitae (CV) to document acquired trainings. Reviews case files to prepare for and testify in court. Provides public fingerprinting services on a weekly basis.
Community Outreach (5%) - Non-Essential
Attends and photographs multiple types of ceremonies including units/squads upon request and special events involving the department. Gives various presentations to students and citizens at schools and events. Provides ride-alongs and facility tours for the public.
Other duties as assigned (5%) - Non-Essential
Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
Schedule will include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Work will include some exposure to physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazards including confined spaces, direct sun, dust, fumes, hostile situations, and biological fluids.

Full Hourly Range: $19.97 - 34.44 USD

Experience working in law enforcement, crime scene processing, criminal justice, or a related field.
